Wi-Fi calling in India: set it up, and know its limits.

By SignalFix · Facts checked 2026-10-02

Short answerWi-Fi calling sends your normal mobile calls over a Wi-Fi connection when mobile signal is weak. Airtel and Jio say it works on any Wi-Fi network at no extra charge, on supported phones. Turn it on in your phone's settings. It only works where your Wi-Fi is strong, so it doesn't help in lifts, basements or rooms without good Wi-Fi.

What Wi-Fi calling is

Wi-Fi calling (sometimes VoWiFi) lets your phone carry calls and SMS over Wi-Fi instead of the mobile network. Your number stays the same, the person you call sees nothing different, and the phone switches automatically.

How to turn it on

  • Android: Settings → Network / Connections → SIM → Wi-Fi calling (names vary by brand).
  • iPhone: Settings → Phone (or Mobile Data) → Wi-Fi Calling.
  • Your SIM's operator must support it on your phone model. Jio and Airtel publish lists of supported devices.
  • Vi: availability has been rolled out circle by circle; check with Vi for your circle.

Why it doesn't work

  • The setting is off, or the phone model isn't supported for your operator.
  • The Wi-Fi in that room is weak, so the phone stays on poor mobile signal.
  • The router is far away or behind several walls. A better-placed router or mesh Wi-Fi usually fixes it.
  • Calls drop while walking between rooms, as the phone hands over between Wi-Fi and mobile.

Its limits

Wi-Fi calling depends on your broadband and your Wi-Fi coverage. When the broadband is down, so are those calls. It doesn't help guests whose phones aren't set up, security staff in the basement, or anyone in a lift.
